...Till Then

notes
. . . Till Then is composer / pianist Danilo Perez’s first new studio recording as a leader since the GRAMMY nominated Motherland in the fall of 2000. The last 3 years have been the most fruitful of his distinguished career in terms of raising his public profile both within the jazz world and beyond, as he has played for large and enthusiastic audiences all around the world as a member of the critically acclaimed Wayne Shorter Quartet. Featured on half of this new recording are the other two members of that group, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, whose musical telepathy with Perez have raised the bar of excellence in the art of acoustic improvisation.
Danilo’s lyricism and exuberance have never b een more pronounced or emotionally satisfying and his playing has developed an engaging vocal quality, lines that ”sing” with ideas and phrases that linger. Multiple GRAMMY award-winner Tommy LiPuma once again produces, as he has for all 4 recordings Perez has made for the Verve Music Group. The sonic quality is top-notch and the music amongst the most melodic and engaging that Danilo has yet recorded.
Augmenting the two trios, are vocalist/lyricist Lizz Wright who penned the exquisite words to the moving title tune (dedicated to Danilo’s good friend, composer Mauricio Smith who passed away in 2002) and whose rich voice is also featured on the leader’s haunting arrangement of Joni Mitchell’s Fiddle and the Drum, a mesmerizing duet for Perez’s harmonically rich piano voicings and Wright’s angelic yet deeply assured vocal.
. . . Till Then is Danilo’s most accomplished recording to date and one that should help him garner a wider and ever more appreciative audience.
